Try these different activities to learn more about different forces, how loads can affect structures, good materials for building and how using certain shapes can make a structure stronger.
Take notes and draw diagrams in your GD books as you go through each lab. You will need your bridge basics to be successful here.

Here's what it would look like playing with toys and drinking from a cup if Earth did not have gravity. After asking the students for some feedback on making the classroom and learning more enjoyable, here’s what they came up with.
Class suggestions · Routines too boring, change up the routines · Have individual, partners and group work · More harder homework · Homework folder to place homework · More cushions or pillows · Use of games and drama in class · Spelling homework, vocabulary · Have a class pets or plants · Decorate the classroom · Less teacher directed lesson (less talking) · More visuals around the class · More reading timed and have more books and comics in class · Display student work · Zoom projector · Games at the end of class · Grammar games · Write book reports or book review after reading to share with the class These are great suggestions and I hope to implement them throughout the year when they fit. Thank you 5R and 5A students! Mr. Huynh Students handed in their first "big" piece of wirting, an autobiography, this week. They went through the writing process which consists of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Their main focus in the 6 + 1 Traits of writing was on Sentence Fluency and Conventions.
The students also were familiarized with their long lost friend from last year, the rubric. The rubric was used to guide students and to show where they can improve after their self assessment. Keep an eye out for the writing to come home soon after it's assessed. This week students worked on their autobiography, completing their first draft and learned about the process of writing and how to use a revision and editing checklist during the self and peer editing process.
In GD, students were exploring structures and had a short experiment in building a structure out of paper to support a book. They tested using heavier books and observed for the differences that made structures successful or fail. In class, students will be enjoying a read aloud book by the name of Hubert Invents the Wheel. This is a fun book where students learn about how the wheel was invented told as a story and with elements of history included. The information from this book will provide the students with some background knowledge to the unit The Fertile Crescent. Week 2 week by quickly and TGIF (abbreviation).
This week, students where introduced to reading non-fiction and how to find information using the table of contents and index and using pictures, captions and the glossary to learn. Many students who do not normally read non-fiction enjoyed some time to find and read something of their interest and at the same time expand their reading interest. In GD, students worked in partners on their KWL for the unit "Forces acting on Structures". Many students knew about Sir Isaac Newton, the Laws of Motion, examples of forces and how they can affect structures. It was good to see so many students coming to class with such a strong prior knowledge and an eagerness to participate and learn from each other. Below are expectations created by the class and how the students can reach them. |
