As a class, we looked at new words, making prediction of the meanings based on our prior knowledge and from the look of the word itself. This strategy will help students when they encounter new words in reading and learning. Students examined the root word, prefix and suffix to determine the meanings if possible and to learn how to break down the word into smaller parts to spell with ease.
From the given words, students could further develop their vocabulary by examining the antonyms and synonyms. Learning to spell was only the first part of the lesson and the second part consisted of using the words correctly in sentences. Students work on their own and then compared with the group mates to check if they had used the words correctly.
Ask your child for a spelling demonstration to check their learning.
